The secret to creating your $100 professional website

Stretch your money

Contrary to what you may have heard, you DON’T have to spend thousands of dollars to get a good website.  You really can create a professional website for $100 dollars, and still have money left over for a latte.

Don’t care for lattes?  Fine, then buy yourself a beer, a Coke, or whatever else tickles your fancy.  Whatever you decide, your Ben Franklin will be enough for creating your website.

It’s true that many businesses pay thousands of dollars for a website.  It’s also true that many businesses fail, and one of the reasons they fail is having costs that are greater than revenue.  So, bootstrapping and keeping your business lean is a great way to reduce your risk when you start a consulting business.

Besides the hefty price tag, a several-thousand-dollar website will likely take weeks or months before it goes live.  So, not only are you wasting money, but you’re also wasting precious time.

Creating a professional website in a couple hours for $100 makes the most of your scarce resources.

Why is a website so important?

A website allows potential clients to find you, learn about your services, and establishes professional credibility.  But a more direct benefit is that a website lets your customers come to you, rather than you having to spend tons of time cold-calling.  Over the past year, I’ve gotten about half of my new clients directly from my website.

So what?

I don’t know about you, but I hate making cold-calls.  I’m not a slickster salesperson, and would much rather spend my time working on billable work instead of cold-calling prospects.

Well, when a client finds you from a Google search, and has looked at your website before calling you, that’s a great lead.  The potential client knows what they want and they’re pretty sure you can deliver.  You just need to close the deal.

What can you really get for $100?

Good question!  For under $100, you can get:

  • your own website address (for example,, and
  • a year of hosting (in other words, a company to store and keep your website visible to the world).

That may not sound like much, but there are some fantastic free and easy-to-use tools to personalize your site and give it a professional look.

$100 Website Guide

Best of all, you can:

  • be a tech newbie, and
  • create your entire website in a couple of hours.

What’s not to like?

While there are hosting companies that give you tools to create a website, you’re required to pay every year for the service, and will have limits on how many pages you can have–unless you want to pay more.

With the tools, tips, & tricks in my ebook, you can:

  • have essentially unlimited pages and content on your site,
  • more flexibility for your website design, and
  • literally hundreds of tools that you can add to your website to automate things like e-mail marketing, and even create a shopping cart for users.

It’s easier than you think

Bootstrapping for Consultants | Business Consulting Buzz - September 26, 2011 Reply

[…] Like expensive technical equipment, most business owners think that a website costs thousands of dollars.  Not true.  Even if you’re not a techie, you can get a professional website with a ton of functionality for less than $100.  That’s right–for a single Benjamin Franklin.  That leaves a lot of cabbage left over for other things–like medical insurance, your salary (yay!), or lattes–a lot of lattes.  For doubters, you can see exactly how in my free ebook. Thanks, Kathy! That’s a huge reason I started the blog–to prevent others from having to muddle through the same mistakes I made. 🙂

This website guide is awesome! Our new site is up and running after about two hours of work, just like you said.

Thank you so much for putting it together and making it free. As I was following all the steps you laid out, I kept wondering how I would have ever figured this stuff out on my own. I wish you the best of luck in all your online and offline ventures!
