As an admitted perfectionist, when I heard someone say “start before you’re ready,” it made me a bit anxious. What if I make mistakes? What if it doesn’t work? What if it fails? And on and on…
But it’s really great advice. I’ve talked to lots of people who have the skills and experience to start consulting independently, and a lot of them have reasons to not take the plunge. There’s never a perfect time.
And it doesn’t matter. Start anyway. You’ll make mistakes, but you’ll learn from them and improve.
The point is to just get started. Just that simple act is empowering, and will get you fired up to do more. It’s easy and safe to jot down ideas in a document, but it can be a lot harder to make a more public commitment. Do something a bit daring, a bit out of your comfort zone, and you’ll be surprised at how it’ll propel you forward.
Where to start? Here are a few ideas:
- print business cards
- register a domain name and create a website
- tell your friends and family that you’re starting a business
What are you waiting for? Life is short. Take a risk.
